The Bronze and the Brimstone- Lory Kaufman

Written By: Kellie - Nov• 08•11

Synopsis: Hansum, Shamira and Lincoln, three teens from the 24th-century, are trapped in 14th-century Verona, Italy. They’ve survived many deadly experiences by keeping their wits about them and by introducing futuristic technology into the past. Principal among these inventions is the telescope, which brought them to the attention to the rich and powerful.

Amazingly, none of this is their biggest challenge. Because a rash illness is spreading across Verona – and it is threatening to consume everyone.
Do they have a future in this past? -Goodreads

Review: I loved the first book in Lory Kaufman’s History Camp series and so, could not wait to dive into the second book of the series, and while I didn’t love The Bronze and the Brimstone quite as much as The Lens and The Looker, I was not disappointed and still really enjoyed this read.

The concept of this series is so fantastic, and a great way to explore history while keeping the characters modern and relateable. It’s really interesting to see how these teenagers from the future handle the past. Culture shock is an understatement, and you definitely feel for these kids and everything they are put through.

That being said, I found the pacing of this story to be less to my liking than the first book, and at times the plot seemed to lull, leaving me skimming a bit in order to jump back into the action. A lot of this had to do with the romance aspect which I found a little far-fetched and soap-opera-ey. It wasn’t bad, but I wasn’t especially rooting for the characters to find their happily ever after.

Overall, I didn’t enjoy The Bronze and the Brimstone quite as much as the debut novel in this series, but it was still a great read, especially for anyone who enjoys history. I would definitely recommend this book and am curious to see how this series is going to finish off in the final book.
